The rolling mill housing stand is an important part of the rolling mill, which mainly bears the force of the rolling mill, so the stand must have enough strength and rigidity. According to the form and requirements of the steel rolling mill, the rolling mill stand can be divided into two types: closed stand and open stand.

1) Closed stand

Closed stand usually has very high strength and rigidity, mainly used in the rolling mill with large rolling force, such as blooming mill and strip mill. When the roll is changed, it is drawn out of or insert into the stand along the axis of the roll.

Compared with the open stand, the closed stand has high strength and rigidity, while is less convenient for changing rollers

2) Open stand

Open stand is compozed of frame column and the upper cover. Its rigidity is low, mainly used in horizontally-arranged section mill or wire mill. When rolls are changed, thay are lifted up or installed  from above the stand.

The strength and the rigidity of the open stand are worse than that of the closed stand, the processing surface is more and the cost is higher, while the advantage is that the roll changing is convenient.
